What It Is and Why Run It
The Trail Caldera de El Cuchillo is one of those races that summarizes Lanzarote in 10 kilometers: picón, malpaís, smell of taro, and a village cheering you on. Perfect if you want an explosive trail that's very runnable, with a technical edge on loose rock sections. Coming from road running, this is a great gateway to volcanic terrain.
Race Day Schedule (Provisional)
- Bib collection at start area (organizer confirms times the week of the event).
- Chinijos Race (kids by age groups, short distances) to warm up.
- 5.1 km popular race at village festival pace.
- 10.6 km trail as the main event late afternoon (exact time in regulations).
When the organizer publishes the 2026 regulations, we'll update schedules, start order, and corrals if any.
Course and Terrain
- Surface: mix of volcanic track (picón/jable), trail, and some loose rock sections.
- Profile: rolling; no long climbs, but "leg-breaking" punchy hills you'll feel.
- Views: of the caldera and agricultural landscape of El Cuchillo.
- Marking: visible flags, checkpoints and volunteers at key junctions.
- Heat/wind: October is usually mild, but when it blows, you'll notice in open areas.
Race Strategy (Runner to Runner)
10.6 km
- Km 0–2: start controlled; let your heart rate rise without overdoing it.
- Km 2–7: sustained pace on track; use flat sections to pick up cadence.
- Loose rock sections: "light" feet, look 2–3 m ahead.
- Last 2–3 km: progression and compact stride; think lively ankles and firm arms.
5.1 km
- High pace race from the start; find a group and avoid unnecessary changes on climbs.
Recommended Gear
- Light trail shoes (medium lugs work perfectly for picón).
- Socks that don't collect fine sand; gaiters optional if you're a "magnet" for jable.
- Cap/visor and clear glasses if there's dust on the track.
- Soft flask small if you like to wet your mouth (depending on aid stations).
- Anti-chafe cream on feet if you're not used to volcanic sand.
Local Logistics
- Parking: better outside the circuit and short walk to start/finish.
- El Cuchillo Festival: village atmosphere, perfect for coming with family.
- Post-race: water, something salty and easy walk to loosen up; volcanic surface "loads" calves/soleus.
Quick Checklist
- Bib and chip attached.
- 2 extra safety pins or race belt.
- Trail shoes already broken in.
- Water bottle/soft flask (if using).
- Post-race meeting point with your group.
