May 2026 placed much of Lanzarote’s endurance conversation around IRONMAN, but the month was not only about the professional race. It also closed the youth triathlon championship window and pointed towards June, summer and the late-season calendar.
The focus: IRONMAN Lanzarote
On 23 May, IRONMAN Lanzarote returned to Puerto del Carmen with a high-level edition. Sam Laidlow won in 8:03:40 and Lucy Charles-Barclay took the women’s race in 9:15:39. Cadena SER Lanzarote reported more than 1,400 participants from 61 nationalities, underlining the sporting and tourism impact of race week.
For the island, IRONMAN has a double scale: a major professional race at the front and hundreds of age-group athletes turning the event into a family, logistical and emotional experience. That mix affects accommodation, restaurants, transport, volunteering and local sports conversation for several days.
Youth sport and continuity
The Lanzarote Youth Triathlon and Aquathlon Championship had its third round scheduled for 16 May at Lago de La Santa, according to the FECANTRI notice. TriLanzarote has not yet found a consolidated final ranking, but the three-round format confirms an important line of work: giving young athletes, clubs and families a structured competitive calendar.
Youth sport matters because it prevents the island’s triathlon identity from depending only on major events. Without a base structure, international races can feel detached from local clubs. With championships like this, the calendar gains depth.
What comes next
June points towards the Lanzarote Wine Run, scheduled for 13 and 14 June in La Geria according to SIPAM Lanzarote, with long race, short race, walking and WineFestival programming. After that, summer and the late season bring open-water swims, popular running, trail events and Tinajo You Trail, scheduled for 4 and 5 September.
The editorial advice for athletes is simple: if IRONMAN has just inspired you, use June to choose the next target carefully. An open-water swim can improve confidence in the sea; a trail race can build strength and technical skill; an autumn triathlon can be the next step if spring left you wanting more.
