Where to stay for sports events in Lanzarote
How to choose where to stay based on race venue, transport, supporters, bike storage, timings and sports atmosphere.
Updated
Choosing accommodation for a race in Lanzarote is not just about finding a nice hotel. The area affects sleep, transfers, meals, bikes, supporters and race-day stress. A good choice makes the week flow; a poor one turns every task into a journey.
Puerto del Carmen
Puerto del Carmen is the most logical area for IRONMAN Lanzarote and for many swims or events linked to Playa Grande. It has a promenade, beaches, restaurants, varied accommodation and a sports atmosphere. For supporters, it allows several parts of the race to be followed on foot.
The weakness is demand during major event weeks. Book early, check whether bike storage is allowed and measure the real distance to start, finish or transition. One kilometre with bag, wetsuit and nerves feels longer than it looks on a map.
Costa Teguise
Costa Teguise works well for east-coast events and races such as the World Triathlon Cup or local popular races. It is family-friendly, has beaches and services, and is relatively close to Arrecife. If your race starts elsewhere, check transport before choosing it only because of price.
Playa Blanca
Playa Blanca is a good base for events in Yaiza, Papagayo, Marina Rubicón or the south. Magma Yaiza Triathlon is an example where staying nearby reduces friction. It is also pleasant for supporters, although it is farther from La Santa, Tinajo or Costa Teguise.
La Santa and Tinajo
For Volcano Triathlon, Tinajo You Trail or training linked to Club La Santa, staying nearby can be a huge advantage. Logistics become simpler, but the accommodation offer is more specific and less urban. If you travel with non-racing companions, consider whether they prefer resort services, a rental car or more tourist-focused areas.
Before booking
Ask about bike storage, early breakfast, fridge, kitchen, parking, lift access and cancellation policy. Check whether you can walk to the start or will depend on a car. Also look at nearby restaurants for the pre-race dinner and supermarkets for simple breakfasts.
The best accommodation is not always the closest. It is the one that reduces uncertainty for your specific race.
Book with race day in mind
When comparing places to stay, think about the most awkward day, not the prettiest one. If it rains, gets windy or you leave before sunrise, you will appreciate easy breakfast, dry clothes, clear parking and a simple route to the start. If you travel with family, separate needs: the athlete may need calm and a kitchen, while supporters may prefer beach or pool. Discussing this early prevents the perfect accommodation for one person becoming heavy for everyone else.
